Healthcare Options for UMass Chan Students
UMASS Chan students have multiple options for healthcare. Located in the heart of Worcester, students have convenient choices to access healthcare either on or within a few miles from campus. SHS utilizes partnerships within the community and within UMASS Memorial to extend healthcare service options to students. Students can choose the option/s that best suit their health needs and based on their insurance coverage and preference.
Choosing a new Primary Care Provider (PCP)
· Establish with Family Medicine Practice (FCM) – e-mail Student Health studenthealth@umassmemorial.org
· Call (1800 UMASS MD) – To find PCP options with the UMASS System
· Independently find PCP in the community
*** Students who choose to keep their own PCP are to contact their Primary Care provider for urgent, preventative care and for follow-up of chronic or recurrent conditions. Issues that may require a referral to a specialist or diagnostic testing typically require a patient’s PCP to place those orders for insurance coverage. If your PCP is out of state or you feel that they are located too far away for consistent care, please consider finding a PCP in the area prior to the start of school.
Student Health partners with Family Medicine (FCM). This is an excellent option for students who choose to establish with a Primary Care Provider and would like comprehensive primary care services located at the University campus. FCM is a fully functioning ambulatory family medicine practice that offers comprehensive primary care services to patients in the community as well as to students who choose to transfer their primary care to a provider to this practice.
To access healthcare in the Family Medicine Practice (FCM) students must transfer their PCP to this practice and establish care at their new patient visit.
Through this partnership, students have the added convenience of calling Student Health during their business hours to facilitate appointments and receive triage nurse services when needed. Student Health can also coordinate booking new patient appointments for the FCM practice.
If you would like to establish care in FCM please e-mail Student Health at: studenthealth@umassmemorial.org.
Please note: Prior to your first visit in FCM, if you need healthcare or prescription refills you will need to contact your prior PCP or go to an urgent care that can provide refills. It can take several months to obtain a new patient appointment in FCM as well as other offices in the area so please plan accordingly.
Students who do not currently have a PCP and/or choose not to establish with a PCP can go to walk- in urgent care clinics in their area.
