February Resident Spotlight: Sam Fox, MD
In this month’s Resident Spotlight, we feature Sam Fox, MD, a second-year, Internal Medicine Resident. We recently caught up with Dr. Fox to learn more about his clinical and research interests, what makes UMass Chan a great place for residency, and more!
Hometown?
I grew up in Marblehead, Massachusetts.
What are your clinical and research interests?
I am interested in pursuing cardiology in the future. I currently am working on several research projects including recent epidemiologic trends in atrial fibrillation and am also looking at cardiac morbidity in patients with cirrhosis. Additionally, my favorite part of being a resident is being involved in medical education and am working on a curriculum for residents entering their CCU rotation.
Are you involved in any other groups or activities at UMass Chan that you’d like to highlight?
I am involved in the Resident Wellness Committee where we brainstorm and implement initiatives to support our co-resident’s wellness. We recently started Wellness Wednesday, which dedicates specific time for medicine residents on Wednesday afternoons for wellness activities. I am also part of the internal medicine research track which provides additional support and mentorship to help us reach our career goals of being a clinician-researcher.
What makes UMass Chan a great place for your residency?
The mentorship at UMass Chan has been incredible. Everywhere I turn, there has been someone willing to give me career advice, educate, or help troubleshoot and drive forward my research.
Favorite hobbies?
I love cooking new recipes whenever I get the chance. I most recently made homemade brioche buns for smash burgers. I also love reading, skiing, hiking, exercising, and paddleboarding.
Favorite thing to do in Worcester/Worcester area?
I really enjoy walking the nearby rail trail with my wife and we try to get out there weekly. You will often find us out and about at some of the local restaurants like Volturno or Mare E Monti.
In your spare time, what TV show do you binge?
Currently, I am rewatching Parks and Recreation. I try to keep things light after long hours at the hospital!
Favorite holiday?
The 4th of July. I recommend checking out Marblehead for its harbor illumination and fireworks show. It’s a time when all of our friends and family come back to town.
Favorite guilty pleasure snack?
This is lame, but anyone who knows me knows I am on a “health journey” and always have a bag of almonds by my side. But if I am being truthful, I love a good 2:00 a.m. donut from Dunks while on the night shift.
