Dr. Brehm specializes in novel preclinical models with human immune responses to investigate approaches to downregulate and activate the human immune system for treating type 1 diabetes (T1D) and cancer. His laboratory examines human beta cells from individuals with T1D in vivo as they interact with intact immune systems from those same donors. The ultimate goal is to understand the etiology and pathogenesis of autoimmune T1D to develop new therapies or drugs for personalized medicine.
