Application to the 2024-2025 Mick Godkin Scholarship

[download worksheet (docx)]

Background:

The Mick Godkin Scholarship will be awarded to selected final year University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) medical students to recognize commitment and achievements in global health.  For this scholarship, commitment to global health may include demonstrated learning, leadership, research and/or service related to underserved populations in two major categories: those currently living outside of the U.S., or those that are living inside the U.S. with recent international origins, such as immigrant or refugee populations.

These scholarships of up to $1000 each are made available thanks to the Mick Godkin Scholarship Fund, which was established in 2013 to honor the foundational work in global health by Dr. Mick Godkin, who is a retired faculty from the UMMS Department of Family Medicine & Community Health.

Application criteria:

Students may apply for this scholarship if they meet both of the following two criteria:

  • Applicants are in their final year of medical school at UMMS and incurred related expenses through their med school career
  • Applicants have NOT received a Mick Godkin Scholarship previously

All UMMS medical students, both students who are in the UMMS Global Health Pathway (GHP), and students who are not in the GHP, are welcome to apply.

International travel during the 2024-2025 academic year is NOT a requirement for applicants, since: (a) the scholarships recognize long-term commitment to global health, and applicants may have contributed to global health efforts and (b) the scholarships recognize commitment to global health, where “global health” may include a focus on populations living inside the U.S. with recent international origins, such as immigrant or refugee populations.  However, students must have incurred related expenses during medical school. Related expenses can include local, regional or international travel, expenses related to the preparation of posters or other materials; travel to present information regarding global health, etc.

Selection process:

Applications will be reviewed by representatives from the UMMS Office of Undergraduate Medical Education, the International Medical Education Program, and the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health.

Awardees will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstration of long-term commitment to global health
  • Achievement, leadership, research and/or service related to global health
  • Participation in activities that contribute to UMMS programming and/or benefit future student experiences
  • Participation in leadership roles related to global health training, education, research and/or service
  • Applicant’s financial need

Instructions for applicants:

  • Due date:  Applications for the Mick Godkin Scholarship must be submitted by 11:59 pm on Monday, March 3rd.  Applicants should submit their completed application as a Word document sent via email to the UMMS International Medical Education Program (IMEP) at: IMEP-GHP@umassmed.edu.
